The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is a prestigious institution that pays homage to the vibrant music and entertainment culture of Long Island, New York. Incorporated in July 2005 as a nonprofit organization under the New York State Board of Regents, LIMEHOF operates as a museum with a provisional charter in the state. Since its inception, the Hall of Fame has been recognizing and honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to the music and entertainment industry on Long Island.
The heart of LIMEHOF lies in its Induction Ceremonies, held biennially since 2006, where musicians, music executives, and other entertainment professionals are formally inducted into the Hall of Fame. The selection process is meticulous, with a dedicated committee carefully reviewing the candidates’ eligibility based on their time living and performing within the geographic area of Long Island, which includes Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk Counties.
One of LIMEHOF’s core missions is to support local education in the field of music and entertainment. The organization has been actively nurturing aspiring talent by providing tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships to Long Island High School Seniors. Additionally, it acknowledges and celebrates educators who have made a significant impact on their students and the community through the annual Educator of Note Awards. LIMEHOF also hosts concerts where high school bands and orchestras have the opportunity to perform alongside illustrious inductees, creating unique experiences and fostering musical growth.
A significant milestone for LIMEHOF occurred in November 2022 when it opened the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame and Museum in Stony Brook, NY. The event was marked with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Ernie Canadeo, Chairman of LIMEHOF, the board of directors of the organization, local government officials, and representatives from the Ward Melville Heritage Organization, the property’s landlord. The impressive 8800 square foot building houses a museum that showcases the extensive history of Long Island music. Within its walls, visitors can explore the contributions of over 120 inductees through an array of memorabilia, photographs, and videos. The museum also features a rotating exhibit, the first of which is dedicated to “Long Island’s Legendary Club Scene – 1960’s-80’s.” Furthermore, a surround sound theater and two stages offer a versatile space for musical performances and speaker presentations, ensuring a dynamic experience for all visitors.
In its continuous efforts to evolve and explore new initiatives, LIMEHOF has partnered with Catholic Health, a prominent Long Island healthcare system. In 2023, they plan to launch the “Health and Harmony” program, which aims to delve into the profound relationship between music and health and wellness. By leveraging the power of music, LIMEHOF aspires to contribute positively to the well-being of the Long Island community.
As the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame continues to grow and adapt, it remains a beacon of inspiration and celebration, preserving the legacy of the region’s musical heritage while nurturing the next generation of musical talent. Its commitment to education and community outreach solidifies its position as a prominent cultural institution on Long Island, promoting the power of music and entertainment for generations to come.
