Bringing Stories to Life, One Performance at a Time

Nestled in the heart of Oakdale, Long Island, the CM Performing Arts Center stands as a testament to the power of artistic expression, collaboration, and community engagement. Founded in 1987 by Noel S. Ruiz, the organization has blossomed into a creative haven that produces remarkable theatrical productions, nurtures artistic talents, and enriches the cultural fabric of the region. The center’s unwavering commitment to excellence, diversity, and community has paved the way for its remarkable journey over the years.

From Dream to Reality: The Genesis

Noel S. Ruiz, inspired by his experiences as a youth minister, recognized the transformative potential of music, drama, and dance in fostering expression and unity. What began as a traveling performance troupe concept soon evolved into the Creative Ministries, founded on February 15, 1987, by Ruiz along with co-founders Joseph Campanello, Brian Schnurman, and Lynn Cahalan. The group’s earliest endeavors included dynamic presentations like “The Journey, Cross and Crucifixion,” which toured schools, churches, and organizations across Long Island and neighboring boroughs.

From Humble Beginnings to a Flourishing Stage

The Creative Ministries quickly gained momentum, outgrowing its initial rehearsal space and shifting to a larger facility in Holbrook. By 1994, they were producing major musicals year-round, assembling casts and crews of up to 150 people, complete with orchestras, sets, costumes, and more. However, as the group’s ambitions grew, so did the desire for a dedicated performance space.

In 1996, the organization embarked on a remarkable journey of its own, transforming a long-abandoned movie theater into the Creative Ministries Performing Arts Center, affectionately known as “The Noel S. Ruiz Theatre.” With substantial financial and volunteer support, the theater opened its doors in May 1997 with the production of “Man of La Mancha.” This marked a pivotal moment as Creative Ministries found a permanent home, giving wings to their creative aspirations.

Thriving Amid Challenges

Over the years, CM Performing Arts Center weathered challenges with resilience and unwavering community support. The late 2000s brought a broader array of programs and partnerships, including the merger with the Airport Playhouse, enhancing CM’s audience reach and artistic offerings. Throughout these changes, CM’s commitment to their original production, “The Journey, Cross & Crucifixion,” remained strong, carrying the essence of their mission to new generations.

A Legacy of Dreaming Impossible Dreams

The passing of founders Noel S. Ruiz and Joseph W. Campanello marked a poignant moment in the organization’s history. Yet, their spirits lived on as the CM community rallied, determined to honor their legacy. The theater’s main stage was fittingly named after Noel S. Ruiz, a tribute to his vision and dedication. Generous donations further facilitated restoration and expansion efforts, culminating in the creation of “The Onyx” rehearsal space and black box theater.

As CM Performing Arts Center journeys forward, it continues to dream impossible dreams, captivating audiences with its powerful performances. The upcoming production of “Into the Woods,” a timeless classic weaving beloved storybook characters into a captivating narrative, exemplifies CM’s dedication to bringing enchanting tales to life.

A Vibrant Future Beckons

From its humble beginnings as a traveling troupe to its current status as a cultural cornerstone on Long Island, CM Performing Arts Center’s journey has been nothing short of remarkable. As it faces the future, the center remains committed to fostering artistic growth, celebrating diversity, and nurturing a vibrant community through the magic of theater. With each performance, CM continues to touch hearts, inspire dreams, and contribute to the vibrant cultural tapestry of Long Island.
